Barbara Hinske News

August is dragging on, with its signature unrelenting heat. What’s unusual this year is that we’ve had absolutely no rain to break the cycle. No matter; the A/C works well in my office and I’ve been busy writing my new book—the one where I’ll share my proceeds with the Foundation for Blind Children. I’ve received the most generous help from the remarkable staff and students at the Foundation and the words are pouring onto the page. I’ve already done a major re-write of one of the characters and I had an epiphany this morning that will lead two of the other characters down slightly different paths. I’ll spend the rest of the week on those revisions.

This is by far the most complex book I’ve ever written from a character development perspective. I’m working on it with my long-term writing coach and editor, Linden Gross. She’s a dream to work with. The writing process is always hard work, with lots of tired muscles and sore eyes, but the results are joyful.

Getting a taste of white cane mobility training from the terrific Spencer Churchill.

In the meantime, Shelving Doubts (the Sixth book in the Rosemont Series), is in final edits and on track for publication in October.

I’ve put a stop to all of the baking I was doing this summer and have just started a strict 30 day diet. I’m 2 meals into it and so far, so good. Sigh. Only 88 more meals to go! The Great British Baking Show starts a new season this week, so I hope it doesn’t send me back into my kitchen.

I’m binge watching all 6 seasons of Downton Abbey, in preparation for the movie that’s coming out on September 20. If you’ve been a subscriber for very long, you know that I had a gig as the Downton Abbey reviewer for a popular British entertainment magazine. To say that I’m DA obsessed is an understatement. I plan to see the new movie at the first showing on the morning it comes out.

Any Mahjong fans out there? My mother was a terrific player and I’ve always wondered about it. A group of women at my church have invited newcomers, so I’m going to attend this afternoon. I’m not much of a card player and I can’t remember who’s played what to save myself, so I’m not too sure about this. I’ll give it a go. Any advice?

That’s all from here. Fall is—thankfully—right around the corner. I hope everyone has a good Labor Day weekend!
